A granite city that faces its river, the Douro, whose medieval Ribeira waterfront gave the country its name and whose great iron bridge finally married the two banks. Austere in stone yet exuberant on its surfaces: baroque towers, churches sheathed in blue tile, and a wine, aged across the water in Gaia, that carried the city's name around the world.
