Where to walk in South Africa

  • Cape Town (3 tours): The Mother City of South Africa, cupped between the sea and the sheer wall of Table Mountain, and one of the most beautiful cities on earth. It began as a Dutch East India Company refreshment station in sixteen fifty-two and grew into a layered port town: the oak-lined Company's Garden and the star-shaped Castle of Good Hope at its heart, the painted lanes of the Bo-Kaap climbing Signal Hill, and a working harbour that still looks out to Robben Island. Read the old city and the waterfront at your own pace, beneath the mountain.
  • Johannesburg (2 tours): The City of Gold, born in eighteen eighty-six when the world's richest gold reef was found on the highveld and a mining camp exploded into the largest metropolis in sub-Saharan Africa. Its story is the story of modern South Africa: the fortune dug from below, the labour and the townships that grew around it, and the long road to freedom. Read it from Constitution Hill, where an old fort and prison became the home of the Constitutional Court, to Soweto, where the streets carry the memory of nineteen seventy-six and the walk to a free country. At your own pace, on your own schedule.
  • Pretoria (2 tours): South Africa's administrative capital, a graceful jacaranda city on the highveld an hour north of Johannesburg. Founded in eighteen fifty-five and named for the Voortrekker leader Andries Pretorius, it grew around Church Square, the old civic heart ringed by the Palace of Justice and the Raadsaal, and rises to Herbert Baker's Union Buildings, the great sandstone amphitheatre where Nelson Mandela was inaugurated president in nineteen ninety-four. Read the seat of government and its historic square at your own pace, under the purple trees.
