Where to walk in Ireland

  • Dublin (3 tours): Ireland's capital, a Viking trading town on a black pool that the Normans took, the English ruled from a castle for seven centuries, and the Georgians remade into a city of red-brick squares and fanlit doors. Beneath the elegant grid runs an older Dublin of two medieval cathedrals and a buried Norse waterfront; at its heart Trinity College guards the Book of Kells in the Long Room. And on its grandest boulevard the General Post Office still carries the bullet marks of the Easter Rising of nineteen sixteen, where a republic was proclaimed and a city burned. Read the layers of the city, from the black pool to the Rising, at your own pace.
  • Galway (2 tours): The City of the Tribes, a walled Anglo-Norman merchant town on the edge of Gaelic Ireland that grew rich facing the Atlantic and trading with Spain. Its compact medieval core, the Latin Quarter, threads from the old market green past the finest surviving medieval townhouse in Ireland and a great sailors' church to the Spanish Arch on the harbour wall, where the fast river Corrib pours out to the bay. Across the water lies the Claddagh, the ancient fishing village that kept its own customs and gave the world its ring of two hands and a crowned heart, and beyond it the long seaside promenade to Salthill. Read the merchant city and its watery edge at your own pace.
  • Kilkenny (2 tours): Ireland's finest medieval city, packed into a single mile on the river Nore, that was for a time the effective capital of the country. It grew around a church of Saint Canice and a castle of the Anglo-Norman Butlers, Earls and Dukes of Ormond, who ruled here for six centuries, and in the sixteen forties it became the seat of the Confederation of Ireland before Cromwell took it. The Medieval Mile runs from the Butler castle on its terrace up past a Tudor merchant's house and the friars' Black Abbey to the round tower and cathedral of Saint Canice. Behind it wind the narrow slips of a city that staged one of the first witchcraft trials in Ireland and brewed the ale that carried its name. Read the medieval capital at your own pace.
