• Auckland (3 tours): New Zealand's largest city, a harbour metropolis built across a field of nearly fifty volcanoes on the narrow isthmus the Māori call Tāmaki Makaurau, the place desired by many. Around the Waitematā Harbour the old port has become a city of glass, but the layers survive: the restored Victorian warehouses of Britomart and the grand Ferry Building on the waterfront; the colonial commercial heart in the Queen Street valley, with its atmospheric picture palace, its Victorian university and Albert Park laid over an early army barracks; and, up the hill, Parnell, the oldest suburb, and the Auckland Domain, a great park on a volcano crowned by the war memorial museum and its Māori and Pacific treasures. • Christchurch (2 tours): The largest city of the South Island, laid out as a planned English settlement on the flat Canterbury plains in the eighteen fifties and long the most English of New Zealand's cities, a garden city of stone spires and the willow-lined Avon. In February two thousand eleven a great earthquake struck, killing one hundred and eighty-five people and shattering the centre, and much of the old city came down, its cathedral among it. The years since have been a slow and remarkable rebuild: a transitional cathedral, quiet memorials to the dead, a street of pastel shops restored, and gardens and river kept green through it all. • Wellington (2 tours): New Zealand's capital, a compact and windblown city wrapped tight around a great harbour between the hills and the sea, on the land of Te Āti Awa and the wider iwi of Te Whanganui-a-Tara. The seat of government sits on reclaimed land at the head of the harbour: the modern Beehive and the parliament beside it, the huge timber pile of the old government buildings, and Lambton Quay, the shopping street that still follows the original shoreline before the land was raised. Inland runs Cuba Street, the bohemian heart of the city, all Victorian shopfronts, cafes and a famous dribbling fountain, and above it all a heritage cable car climbs to a botanic garden and a lookout over the roofs to the water.
