• Gdansk (2 tours): The great Baltic port of Poland, for centuries one of the richest cities of the Hanseatic trading world and a place where Polish kings, German merchants and Dutch builders all left their mark. Its Main Town is a showpiece of that wealth, the Royal Way running past ornate merchant houses to the Long Market, Neptune's Fountain and the largest brick church in the world. On the river stands the huge medieval Crane, and a short way north lies the shipyard where, in nineteen eighty, a strike led by Lech Walesa gave birth to Solidarity and began to bring down communism across Europe. Its heart is the Main Market Square, the largest medieval square in Europe, laid out under the town charter of twelve fifty-seven, with St Mary's Church and its hourly trumpet call and the long Cloth Hall running down the middle. Above the Vistula rises Wawel, the hill where kings were crowned and buried, and just to the south lies Kazimierz, the old Jewish quarter emptied by the Holocaust and vividly alive again. The Germans destroyed around eighty-five percent of Warsaw in the Second World War, and after the Warsaw Uprising of nineteen forty-four they razed the historic centre almost deliberately; what stands today is a meticulous post-war reconstruction that UNESCO lists precisely as an example of near-total rebuilding. Read the rebuilt Old Town with its market square and mermaid, then follow the grand Royal Route south past churches, palaces and the university to Lazienki, the last king's garden with its palace on the water.
