The great Baltic port of Poland, for centuries one of the richest cities of the Hanseatic trading world and a place where Polish kings, German merchants and Dutch builders all left their mark. Its Main Town is a showpiece of that wealth, the Royal Way running past ornate merchant houses to the Long Market, Neptune's Fountain and the largest brick church in the world. On the river stands the huge medieval Crane, and a short way north lies the shipyard where, in nineteen eighty, a strike led by Lech Walesa gave birth to Solidarity and began to bring down communism across Europe.
