• Bern (2 tours): The capital of Switzerland, one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site, built on a high sandstone spur almost encircled by the River Aare. Founded by the dukes of Zaehringen at the end of the twelfth century and rebuilt in green local sandstone after a great fire, the old town keeps its signature kilometres of covered arcades, its painted Renaissance fountains and the Zytglogge clock tower with its moving figures, all running to the great Minster whose spire is the tallest in the country. Above the Aare the domed Federal Palace houses the parliament of the Confederation, the bears that gave the city its name live in a riverside park, and from the Rose Garden the whole sandstone town can be seen curled inside its river. • Lucerne (2 tours): The medieval lake town where the River Reuss flows out of the Lake of the Four Forest Cantons, one of the most photographed places in Switzerland and a birthplace of Alpine tourism. The old town keeps its painted merchant squares and, above all, its covered wooden bridges: the Chapel Bridge with its stout water tower, among the oldest in Europe, and the older Spreuer Bridge with its grim Dance of Death panels. Above the town runs the Musegg wall with its nine towers, and on a cliff to the north lies the great dying lion carved to mourn the Swiss Guards killed in Paris in seventeen ninety-two. Across the river the Fraumuenster glows with windows by Marc Chagall, and Saint Peter's carries the largest church clock face in Europe. From the founding hill the great avenue of Bahnhofstrasse runs down to the lake past the banking heart of Paradeplatz, while the former factory quarter of Zurich-West has been reborn as a district of art and design.
