Where to walk in United Arab Emirates

  • Abu Dhabi (2 tours): The capital of the United Arab Emirates, a city that began at a single fort beside a well of sweet water on a low desert island and now spreads its towers and its Corniche along the Arabian Gulf. Qasr Al Hosn, the white fort, still stands at the historic heart, the oldest stone building in the city and the seat from which the ruling Al Nahyan governed for two centuries. Along the reclaimed waterfront the modern capital faces the sea, from the Founder's Memorial and its portrait of Sheikh Zayed to the great sweep of the Corniche. And to the east rises the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, one of the largest in the world and open to visitors, a vision in white marble. Read the founding city on its island, from the fort to the mosque, at your own pace.
  • Dubai (3 tours): The largest city of the United Arab Emirates, a trading port on a tidal creek that became a city of record-breaking towers within a single lifetime. The layers survive if you walk them: the coral-and-gypsum lanes and wind towers of the old Al Fahidi quarter on the Bur Dubai bank, where the town began; across the Creek in Deira, the gold, spice and perfume souks and the wooden dhows still loaded by hand along the water; and in Downtown, the deliberate vertical city built at once around the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building on earth, with its lake, its fountain and its mall. Read the city that grew from pearls and trade into glass and steel, from the abra crossing the Creek to the top of the tallest tower, at your own pace.
  • Sharjah (2 tours): The third city of the United Arab Emirates and its self-declared cultural capital, an emirate that chose to rebuild its old town rather than sweep it away. Under a ruler who is himself a historian, Sharjah restored the Heart of Sharjah, the coral-and-gypsum quarter around the Creek, and turned it into a district of museums, art spaces and craft: Al Hisn, the ruler's white fort; the Souq Al Arsah, one of the oldest markets in the country; the great merchant house of Bait Al Naboodah; and the squares of Islamic art and calligraphy that won it a UNESCO cultural title. Around the Khalid Lagoon the city gathers its softer pleasures, the blue-tiled Central Souk, the waterfront gardens, the fountain and the Al Noor Mosque. Read the cultural capital, from the restored old town to the lagoon, at your own pace.
