Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière: The Closing Specimen
- Croix-Rousse: Where the First Industrial Workers Rose: One Lyon hillside, two armed uprisings, one machine. The silk weavers called canuts wove on Jacquard looms that stood about four metres tall, marched twice against the state under a black-flag slogan, and left behind an architecture whose loft windows still measure the loom they housed. About two point three kilometres on the Pentes and the plateau, between eighteen oh four and eighteen thirty-four.
- Lugdunum: The Capital of Roman Gaul: Seven stops on the Fourvière hill. Two thousand years of one civic-religious function performed first by Romans, then by Christians, then by a nineteenth-century basilica built atop the original Roman forum. Two and a third kilometres. The textbook specimen of an imperial provincial capital, read across the dynasties and across the religions, on a single hill above the Saône-Rhône confluence.
- Vieux Lyon's Hidden Passages: From Silk to Resistance: Seven stops. About one and a half kilometres along the rue Saint-Jean spine and the Saône embankment. The largest Renaissance ensemble in France, approximately two hundred and fifteen traboule passages cut through the interiors of Italian-banker silk-merchant townhouses, and the four-century doubling that made the same passages, in nineteen forty-two, the circulation network of the Lyon Resistance.
