Cuenca lies in a valley of four rivers in Ecuador's southern Andes, about 2,550 metres up. Founded in 1557 on open ground beside the ruins of Inca Tomebamba, its adobe houses gained French-style fronts in the straw hat and quinine boom. UNESCO World Heritage since 1999.
